tsuyu, that long grey exhale of June — ends somewhere in the first days of the month, and then the heat comes in without apology. The sky turns the particular shade of blue that only exists in Japanese summer: almost violent in its intensity, the kind of blue that makes you squint and reach for shade. The cicadas, which have been underground for years, emerge all at once and fill every tree in the neighborhood with a sound like static electricity turned up to full volume.

You move more slowly. You drink more water. You sit near open windows in the evening, hoping for the suggestion of a breeze.

And then, if you are lucky — if someone in the house has the old habit, or the good sense — you hear it.

A single, clear note, high and brief and wavering slightly at its end. Then silence. Then another note, from a different direction, a different pitch. Then silence again. Back and forth, not in any rhythm you could predict, entirely at the mercy of whatever air is moving through the house.

The sound of a furin (風鈴) — a Japanese wind chime — is one of those things that is almost impossible to describe and impossible, once heard in the right context, to forget. It is not music. It is something closer to the sound of coolness itself: small, intermittent, arriving unbidden, asking nothing of you except that you notice it is there.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

物 MONO — Furin: The Sound That Cools

The furin is one of the oldest objects in Japanese domestic life, arriving from China over a thousand years ago as a bronze bell hung at the corners of temple roofs, used to ward off evil spirits and indicate the direction of fortune-bringing winds. Somewhere along the centuries, it migrated from the sacred to the ordinary — from temple eaves to the wooden veranda of the family home, where it became, simply, a way to get through summer.

The physics are plain enough: the wind chime doesn’t lower the temperature. What it does is make you attend to the air. Each small sound is a notification that air is moving — and in Japanese summer, moving air, however warm, is everything. The Edo-period physician and naturalist Hiraga Gennai is sometimes credited with the observation that the furin produces not just sound but a psychological sense of coolness — what contemporary neuroscience might describe as a perception-altering stimulus. The body believes what the mind tells it. The mind, hearing that bright note, decides it is cooler than it was a moment ago.

This may be why the craft of furin-making has been taken as seriously in Japan as any other traditional art.

Edo Furin (江戸風鈴) — made in the shitamachi neighborhoods of Tokyo — are glass, mouth-blown, each one slightly imperfect in the particular way that hand-made glass always is. A skilled craftsperson paints the design on the inside of the glass dome, working in reverse, so that the image is seen through the glass itself. The result is a depth of color that printed or outside-painted glass cannot achieve. The sound of Edo furin is bright, slightly glassy — a sound that rings once and dissolves quickly, like a drop of water.

Nambu Furin (南部風鈴) — from the iron-casting tradition of Iwate Prefecture in the north — are cast iron, and their sound is entirely different: lower, rounder, longer, with an overtone that lingers in the air for a moment after the main note has passed. If Edo furin sounds like a raindrop, Nambu furin sounds like a small bell in a very still room. The craftsmanship required is formidable — the same foundries that produce the famous Nambu tetsubin iron kettles make these chimes, and the skill transfers.

There are also Furins made of ceramic, of bamboo, of brass. Each material speaks differently. Each has its season of attention.

What all furin share is a principle that recurs throughout Japanese craft and culture: the most beautiful things do not perform for you. They wait for the right conditions, and then they offer what they have. A Furin on a perfectly still day is silent. It has nothing to prove.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

事 KOTO — Tanabata: The Night the Stars Cross the River

July 7th — the day Shōsho begins — is also Tanabata (七夕), one of the most ancient and widely observed festivals in Japan.

The story behind it is one of the most beautiful in the Japanese calendar, and it is worth telling fully.

In the sky, two stars sit on opposite banks of the Milky Way — the great river of heaven, the Amanogawa. On the western bank lives Orihime (織姫), the Weaver Princess, represented by the star we call Vega. She is the daughter of the Sky King, and she weaves the fabric of heaven without rest, day after day, her shuttle moving through the loom with perfect devotion. Across the river lives Hikoboshi (彦星), the Cowherd Star, represented by Altair, a young man who tends his cattle with the same diligence.

The two meet, fall in love, and marry.

And then — in the way of all good love stories — everything goes wrong. Orihime stops weaving. Hikoboshi neglects his cattle. The Sky King, displeased at the disorder, separates them, placing the Milky Way between them so wide that they cannot cross.

Orihime weeps. The Sky King, moved by her grief, allows them one meeting: on the seventh night of the seventh month, a bridge of birds — a great flock of magpies — forms across the Milky Way, and Orihime crosses to be with Hikoboshi until dawn.

If it rains on that night, the magpies cannot fly, and the lovers must wait another year.

This story — adapted from a Chinese original, filtered through centuries of Japanese imagination and observance — is what Tanabata celebrates. On July 7th, across Japan, bamboo branches are cut and set up in gardens, in entryways, in shopping arcades, and in train stations. People write their wishes and prayers on small strips of colored paper called tanzaku (短冊), and tie them to the bamboo. The branches fill with paper in every color, fluttering in the summer air, each one carrying some private hope upward toward the sky where Orihime and Hikoboshi cross their one-night bridge.

Children write that they want to be good at swimming, or to make friends at school. Old men write that they want to stay healthy one more year. Young women write wishes I cannot guess at. The paper flutters. The bamboo sways. Above, invisible in the summer haze or visible on a clear night with the right darkness and the right patience, Vega and Altair sit on their opposite banks and wait for the bridge of birds.

In the city of Sendai, in Miyagi Prefecture, Tanabata is celebrated on August 7th by the old lunar calendar — the streets are hung with enormous paper decorations so elaborate they take months to make. But in most of Japan, July 7th is the day: quiet, domestic, personal. A bamboo branch in a vase. A child’s crayon wish on yellow paper. The hope that tonight will be clear enough to see two stars.

Children write that they want to be good at swimmingis or to make friends at school. lovers.

But listen: both the Furin and Tanabata are about the same thing. They are about presence in the face of impermanence. They are about learning to receive what arrives and let go of what passes.

The furin rings only when the wind moves. It cannot be commanded. You hang it, and then you wait — in the same patient attention that Orihime waits, year after year, for the seventh night of the seventh month. And when it rings, you don’t try to hold the sound. You let it dissolve back into silence and wait for the next one.

Tanabata is a festival not about reunion exactly, but about the once-a-year quality of reunion — about how the known rarity of something makes it luminous. Orihime and Hikoboshi have exactly one night. That one night is everything. We who have people we love nearby sometimes forget to feel how much we have.

Shōsho arrives at the hinge between longing and receiving. The Tanabata wish. Write one wish on a strip of paper — not a practical goal, but a genuine longing. Something you want for your life, or for someone you love, or for the world. Fold it or leave it flat. Put it somewhere you will see it: on a mirror, in a window, tucked into a book. The act of writing a wish is a small act of faith in the future, which is a practice worth keeping.

2. The sound practice. For one week, keep a window open that is usually closed. Notice what you hear. Not in the way of cataloguing — just in the way of awareness. What sounds come through that you normally filter out? What arrives when you make room for it? The furin teaches us to hear what is already there.

3. The clear-sky moment. On a clear night this week, go outside after ten o’clock and find Vega and Altair — the two brightest stars in the summer sky of the Northern Hemisphere. Vega is high and bluish-white; Altair is slightly lower, with a small star on each side. The Milky Way runs between them. No telescope needed, only darkness and patience. Stand there for five minutes. Think of Orihime and Hikoboshi, and then think of whoever came to mind when you read their story.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Until the Next Turning

The heat will deepen. in Japan on the summer solstice.

It arrives early — before five in the morning, already pale and serious through the sliding paper screens — and it lingers past eight in the evening in a way that feels almost reluctant, as though the day itself is unwilling to let go. The air by late June is heavy with moisture, thick with the smell of green things at their most green. Rain has been falling since early June, the tsuyu rainy season, and the landscape is saturated, almost electric with growth.

This is Geshi (夏至) — the summer solstice, the twenty-second of the twenty-four solar terms, when the sun reaches the highest point in its arc and the year pivots, imperceptibly, toward darkness. Most of the world marks this day, or doesn’t. In Japan, the approach to Geshi carries with it something older and stranger and more beautiful: a ritual of purification practiced at shrines across the country, a cold cup of bamboo-chilled water, and a particular quality of human attention that I have found nowhere else.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Japanese summer, the way wool belongs to winter or linen belongs to spring, it would be bamboo.

Take (竹) grows so fast in the Japanese heat that you can almost watch it — some species add a meter of height in a single day. It is the plant of high summer, of abundance that borders on extravagance, of life pushing upward with everything it has. And yet the qualities it gives us are precisely the opposite of extravagance: coolness, quietness, an almost austere simplicity.

Japanese craftspeople have been working with bamboo for at least two thousand years, developing a vocabulary of forms so extensive that entire careers are built around a single technique. The kagonami (籠編み) basket-weavers of Oita Prefecture. The bamboo flute-makers of Kyoto. The craftsmen who split a single culm of madake bamboo — the most prized variety, harvested only in autumn and winter when the sugars are low and the wood dense — into strips no wider than a matchstick, then weave them into vessels of extraordinary delicacy.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" sake cups with a pleasant chill against the palm, as chasen tea whisks used in the spare, heat-defying practice of cold matcha (hiyashi matcha). A bamboo cup passed from hand to hand on a hot evening is not simply a utensil. It is a small argument for slowing down — the coolness of it asks you to hold it a moment longer than necessary, to feel the fine texture of the nodes under your fingers, to notice that you are here, now, in the middle of summer.

The best bamboo crafts come from Kyushu and the prefectures of western Japan, where the warm, wet climate produces especially fine-grained culms. If you are looking to bring bamboo into your own summer table, seek out madake pieces from established makers — the grain is finer, and the color will deepen beautifully over years of use.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" a strange and beautiful object appears at the entrance gate.

It is a ring — a large one, sometimes two meters in diameter — woven from fresh chigaya grass (Imperata cylindrica), the coarse silver-plumed grass that grows along riverbanks and the edges of rice paddies. The ring is called a chinowa (茅の輪), and to receive the blessing of the ceremony, you must pass through it. Not once, but three times, in a specific figure-eight pattern — left, right, left — while reciting a short poem about the summer’s passing.

The ritual is called Nagoshi no Harae (夏越の祓) — the Great Purification of the passing summer. It is one of the two great purification rites of the Japanese year, the other falling at the end of December. Together they divide the year at its two great hinges: midsummer and midwinter. The idea is straightforward and ancient: the accumulated impurities of the first half of the year — not moral failings, exactly, but a spiritual and bodily tsumi (罪), a gathering of mistakes and missteps and small neglects — are symbolically released, so that you can enter the second half of the year renewed.

At large shrines like Kyoto’s Kamigamo Jinja or Tokyo’s Tomioka Hachimangu, the chinowa draws long, quiet lines of people on the evening of June 30th. Families come with young children who scramble through the ring with delight. Elderly women in light cotton yukata move through it with a practiced solemnity. Office workers in shirtsleeves pass through on their way home, barely breaking stride, and yet somehow the gesture is not perfunctory. There is something in the physicality of stepping through — the sensation of the grass ring close around your shoulders, the smell of crushed green stems — that makes the intention feel real.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Bamboo is one of the most important plants in Japanese Shinto symbolism — it appears at the four corners of sacred spaces (shimenawa ropes are often anchored with bamboo), at New Year’s gates (kadomatsu), and at the entrance to areas under ritual protection. It is considered a pure plant, one that resists impurity, that grows straight and does not corrupt. The hollow internodes of bamboo — that clean, space running through the center of each segment — are understood as a form of mu (無), nothingness, receptivity, the cleared space that purification seeks to create.

When you hold a bamboo cup to your lips on a summer evening, you are, without perhaps knowing it, holding an object that carries this symbolism. The coolness of it is not only about the temperature. It is the coolness of emptiness, of something that has made room.

Nagoshi no Harae is the ritual enactment of making room. The first half of the year is complete. Its weight has been named, carried to the threshold, and — with the simple act of stepping through a ring of grass — released.

The longest day is also, in this sense, a threshold. Here are three practices, drawn from Japanese tradition and adapted for wherever you are.

1. The water ritual. On the evening of June 21st or 30th, fill a bowl with cold water. Place your hands in it, palms down, and hold them still for a moment. Think, quietly, of one thing you are ready to release from the first half of this year — one habit, one worry, one story about yourself that has grown too heavy. Then let the water go.

2. The bamboo table. If you can find a bamboo draining mat, a bamboo cup, or even a bamboo cutting board, bring it to your table this week. Notice the texture, the temperature, the particular quiet of it. Eat slowly. Let the meal be a small ceremony.

3. The solstice pause. At sunrise or sunset in June, step outside and stand still for five minutes. No phone. Just the quality of the light, which is unlike any other day of the year. The Japanese call this kind of attention mitsumeru (見つめる) — to gaze at something steadily, with full presence. You don’t need to do anything with what you notice. Noticing is enough.

Until the Next Turning

The bamboo will keep growing. The grass will keep its green. The days, imperceptibly, will begin to shorten.

In two weeks, we reach Shōsho — the season of slight heat, when the rainy season ends and the real summer arrives in full. We will talk about furin — the Japanese wind chime — and about Tanabata, the star festival, and about the particular longing embedded in a sky full of summer stars.

Until then, I hope you find a threshold to step through. The wheel is always turning. We are always, if we pay attention, arriving somewhere new.

Next issue: No. 02 — 小暑 Shōsho · "Sound of Summer" · July 7 Furin, Tanabata, and the Japanese art of hearing the heat.

MeguruStillnessJapan is a newsletter about Japanese culture, objects, and the art of seasonal living — written for curious readers in North America. forward march of the modern week, people in East Asia developed a way of reading time that was finer-grained and more attentive than anything we tend to practice today.

They divided the solar year not into 12 months, but into 24 solar terms — the nijushisekki (二十四節気). Each term spans roughly fifteen days and marks a precise point in the Earth’s orbit around the sun. Some you may recognize by their poetry: Risshun, the first breath of spring. Geshi, the longest day. Tōji, the night that never seems to end. Others are more subtle — Hakuro, white dew, arriving in early September when the mornings suddenly smell different. Shōman, a little full, in late May when the fields and the heart are quietly, gently satisfied.

These terms originated in ancient China and were woven deeply into Japanese culture over many centuries. But in Japan, they became something more than an agricultural calendar. They became a philosophy of attention — a discipline of noticing, a practice of arriving fully into the present season rather than rushing toward the next one.

<div might surprise you to learn how genuinely season-conscious daily Japanese life remains.

In spring, the cherry blossoms do not merely bloom — they are watched for, welcomed, and mourned as they fall, within the span of a single week. In summer, the specific sound of a wind chime (furin) is considered a cooling sensation in itself. In autumn, families make special journeys to see the maple leaves turn — not as tourists, but as participants in something ancient and necessary. In winter, the first snowfall prompts not complaint but a kind of reverence.

This is not nostalgia or performance. It is the expression of something the Japanese call mono no aware — the bittersweet awareness that all beautiful things are fleeting, and that this fleetingness is precisely what makes them worth full attention.

The 24 solar terms give this awareness a structure. They are gentle reminders, arriving every fifteen days, that the world has shifted slightly on its axis — and that you, too, are invited to shift with it.

What this series is

Every two weeks, arriving in your inbox to align with each solar term as it unfolds in real time, you will receive a letter from Japan.

Each letter is built around two elements that Japanese culture has always held together:

物 MONO — the object. A piece of lacquerware. A cast-iron kettle. A wind chime made from a single piece of glass. A bundle of yuzu resting in a wooden tub. The material culture of Japan is inseparable from its seasons — certain objects belong to certain times of year with a specificity that feels almost sacred. We will look closely at these objects: where they come from, who makes them, what hands have shaped them over centuries, and what it means to bring them into life.

事 KOTO — the practice. The ceremony, the ritual, the custom. Moon viewing in September. The purification rite on the eve of high summer. The first calligraphy of the new year. The quiet, pre-dawn act of making miso in the coldest week of January. These are not museum pieces. They are living practices, still observed in homes and temples and neighborhood shrines across Japan — and, as we will discover together, quietly translatable to lives lived far from Japan.

Each letter brings MONO and KOTO together, because in Japan, they were never truly separate. The object carries the practice. The practice gives the object its meaning.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

A word about slowness

This series does not move fast. It is not a listicle or a highlight reel or a collection of travel tips. It is, I hope, more like a letter from a thoughtful friend who happens to live in Japan and wants to share what she has been noticing lately.

The Japanese word meguру (巡る) means to go around — to circulate, to make a cycle, to return. The seasons meguru. The wheel turns. What we are doing here, together, is paying attention to that turning.

In a world that often feels like it is moving faster than any of us would choose, I find something genuinely restorative in the Japanese seasonal sensibility. Not as an escape, but as a reorientation — a reminder that the year has a texture, and that texture is available to anyone willing to slow down long enough to feel it.

That is what this series is for.

Next issue: No. 01 — 夏至 Geshi · “The Longest Light” · June

If someone forwarded this to you and you’d like to receive the full series, you can subscribe below.

Thanks for reading

MEGURU STILLNESS JAPAN

Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

今すぐ登録する

シェア

MeguruStillnessJapan is a newsletter about Japanese culture, objects, and the art of seasonal living — written for curious readers.

Where Stillness Lives

A letter of welcome from MeguruStillnessJapan

MEGURU STILLNESS JAPAN

Subscribe now

I want to tell you about a morning in late autumn.

I was standing at the window of my apartment in Kobe, holding a cup of tea I had forgotten to drink. Outside, a single ginkgo tree had turned the color of old gold overnight — the kind of color that makes you stop whatever you were doing and simply look. The street below was quiet. A woman walked past carrying a small bundle of chrysanthemums wrapped in newspaper. A shopkeeper was arranging his storefront with unhurried deliberateness.

Nothing was happening in the way the world usually measures things happening.

And yet everything felt full.

I have lived most of my life in Japan, and I have come to believe that this country holds a kind of knowledge about time that the rest of the world has largely forgotten — or perhaps never fully learned. It is not wisdom found in temples or in the polished performances of tradition. It is quieter than that. It lives in the act of choosing a bowl because its weight feels right for winter. In the habit of pausing to notice the first cold night of September. In the particular care taken over a cup of tea when the afternoon is sliding toward evening.

It is, in a word, attention. but as a practice.

Every two weeks, I’ll send you a letter built around one of Japan’s nijushisekki — the 24 solar terms that divide the year into finer, more attentive slices than our calendar typically allows. Each letter arrives timed to the actual season unfolding in Japan right now, so that you are reading about autumn’s first frost as it falls, and about the summer solstice as the longest day tips toward its close.

Each letter carries two threads:

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
